There are thousands of method books out there....which should you choose? That's the problem that confronts most aspiring guitarists. If you go thru my categories on the left, you'll see what I believe is actually worthwhile. I think everyone should have a 'core curriculum' (Basic Guitar) that they focus on and then add styles as they progress. Along the way, you'll want to commit various songs to memory as this is a key way for you to truly learn how to communicate thru the guitar. Just like learning to speak, you need to hear others & copy how they speak....or play guitar in this case. It will also make you feel confident as a 'real guitar player' and give you something to play when asked...check out the Tablature & Songs tab for help with that.
Getting back to the 'thousands of method books'....choose carefully as your time (not to mention your money) is valuable. I'm one of those people who research alot of methods. I do this because I'm paid to teach my students guitar and also because I'm personally in search of the perfect method that puts it all together in a progressive manner. I've not found the perfect method yet but these are the current best in my opinion. Hope it helps, Steve.
Magazines - there are a few that I encourage all to subscribe to: Premier Guitar, Guitar Player, Acoustic Guitar & Bass Player magazine. These are great magazines that will help keep you inspired.
